This 1816 musket was converted to percussion in 1862 by Hewes & Phillips of Newark, New Jersey under contract for the U. S. government. Total conversions done by H&P were 20,000. This is the 2nd type conversion of which about 12,000 were done. They were converted by fitting a replacement breech plug which has an integral bolster. The bolster is flat sided with no clean out screw and is stamped H&P on its face. The
