and there is a well known photograph of the Russian Tsar Nicholas the Second wielding one during military exercises in the 1890s

These, often known as CONQUISTADOR STIRRUPS, date to the late 17th century and are known to have been in the HAHN family of Pomerania and Mecklenburg in that they displays the family Coat of arms. This takes the form of a ROOSTER, which in German is a HAHN. Made of heavy brass, we suspect these were full shoe accommodating stirrups
